John Amos, known for his powerful roles in television classics like “Good Times” and “Roots,” captured the hearts of audiences with his strength and warmth on screen. The news of his passing was confirmed by his son, K. C., who shared that the actor died of natural causes on August 21, 2024.

However, nearly six weeks after his death, his daughter Shannon revealed her shock and sorrow upon learning of her father’s passing through the media. The delay in notification added to the family’s heartbreak, as unresolved tensions and questions emerged, casting a shadow over their time of mourning.

A Heartbreaking Revelation
On October 2, 2024, Shannon Amos revealed through Instagram that she had learned of her father’s death—forty-five days after it happened—through media reports, not from family.
Her words expressed not only her heartbreak but also the shock that came with discovering such news in this unexpected way. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened,” Shannon wrote.
According to official records, John passed away on August 21, 2024, at a hospital in Inglewood, California. His death certificate, which lists his son, K. C., as the “informant” who let the county know of his dad’s death, reveals that John was cremated just nine days after his passing, on August 30.
K. C. now holds possession of his father’s ashes, marking a quiet farewell to the Emmy-nominated actor. The certificate also confirmed that no autopsy was performed.

This swift cremation and the absence of a traditional service or family notification left lingering questions among those close to him, especially Shannon, who felt deprived of a final goodbye.
Long-Standing Family Tensions Resurface
The circumstances surrounding John’s passing have brought unresolved family tensions back into the spotlight. The rift between the siblings didn’t appear overnight. Instead, it seems rooted in years of conflict over their parents’ care and estate.

Shannon had long raised concerns about her brother K. C.’s influence over their father, suggesting he exerted control that extended beyond managing John’s medical and financial affairs. Shannon alleged that K. C. had isolated John from family members, limiting their ability to check in on him or ensure he was well cared for.
Reportedly, Shannon had gone so far as to provide law enforcement with extensive documentation to support her elder abuse claims against K. C. She alleged that her brother impersonated their father in communications, disregarded medical needs, and mishandled finances.
Shannon also claimed that K. C. took actions that cut John off from friends and family, isolating him further as his health declined. This isn’t the first time Shannon and K. C. have clashed over family responsibilities.
When their mother, Noel “Noni” Mickelson, became gravely ill in the late 1990s, the siblings fiercely disagreed on how to handle her care. Shannon, a single mother at the time, wanted to bring their mother to Atlanta, where she could better support her.
K. C., however, insisted on caring for her himself in California. Shannon later alleged that K. C. neglected aspects of their mother’s care and redirected funds intended for her well-being toward his own projects.
Their mother’s passing left unresolved tensions that have persisted, casting a shadow over their relationship.
A Year of Separation
In the final year of her dad’s life, Shannon and other family members struggled to maintain contact with him. According to Shannon, K. C. had changed phone numbers and didn’t respond to messages, making it increasingly difficult for anyone outside his immediate control to reach John.
The last time Shannon saw her father was last year, and since then, her attempts to connect with him had been blocked. “Since October 2023, I’ve been grieving not being able to see him,” Shannon shared the heartbreak of feeling cut off from her father.
Shannon recounted a distressing visit to a hospital in Memphis, where she was forced to sneak past security to see her father. She found him in a frail state and struggling with dementia, but he recognized her and embraced her. Security soon escorted her out, leaving Shannon feeling even more isolated.

Seeking Answers and Public Outcry
Following Shannon’s revelation, other family members publicly voiced their grief and frustration. In a statement signed by John’s goddaughter, niece, grandchildren, and close friends, the family publicly voiced their dismay at learning of his death through the media, rather than from K. C.
They questioned not only the delay in notification but also K. C.’s decision to have John cremated just days after his passing, without consulting them. The family’s grief was deepened by their concerns that K. C. might have deliberately isolated John, kept his health condition hidden, and restricted his interactions.
These allegations, however, were previously disputed by John himself. In a statement made the previous year, John defended K. C., claiming that Shannon’s accusations against her brother were attempts to defame him.
“The aspersions that she’s cast on my son are lies,” he said, adding that he felt his daughter had financially and emotionally mistreated him. Shannon rejected these allegations, asserting that K. C. had manipulated their father’s trust.
In their joint statement, the family claimed that K. C. carefully controlled John’s communications, often scripting their interactions and portraying an image on social media that painted a close bond between father and son.
However, they alleged that John’s reality was quite different, as K. C. monitored his calls, dictated public messages, and kept him from the family, even during the hardest periods of his illness. “Our father suffered from dementia, and KC often gave John verbal prompts to create a narrative on social media that was not reflective of the truth,” the statement read.
For Shannon and her family, the inability to be with John during his final days was a painful injustice. The statement hinted at further suspicion, suggesting K. C. might have influenced John’s will or taken control of financial matters for personal gain.

Online, fans voiced sympathy and sorrow for the family’s situation. Many shared a sense of unease, with one supporter commenting, “Poor John. There was definitely something amiss.” Another expressed frustration over the family conflict, “RIP John. Horrible, tacky behavior by his kids fighting over his money.”
Many mourned the way his legacy had been overshadowed, with one commenter summarizing the general sentiment, “I’m sorry his end was so sad.”

As the family continues to grapple with John Amos’ passing, they are left not only with memories of him but with unresolved questions that cast a shadow over his final days. While K. C. remembers his father as his “best friend” and “hero,” Shannon and other family members continue to seek clarity, frustrated by their exclusion from John’s farewell.
