She has vowed never to use a hot water bottle again
A recruitment consultant said that her skin came off after an old hot water bottle exploded on her legs and private areas.
Yazmin Hardy, who is 27 years old, shared that her legs felt like they were on fire for a whole week after her hot water bottle exploded while she was relaxing on the couch in July.
She shared that she had been dealing with painful menstrual cramps, which made her decide to use a hot water bottle to ease the discomfort. After filling the bottle all the way to the top with hot water from the kettle, she put it back in its cover and lay down to relax.
A 27-year-old from Norfolk, now living in Manchester, shared, “I have really intense period cramps. Using a hot water bottle is one of the few things that actually helps ease the pain.”

“On the first day of my period, I will always fill my hot water bottle up as it helps to soothe the pain a little bit.”
Yazmin said that just a little while later, the hot water bottle burst, and hot water spilled all over her legs, lower belly, and hands.
She quickly took off her clothes and hopped into a cold shower for half an hour to help ease the pain.
Yazmin said, “I heated up the kettle and filled it all the way to the top, just like I usually do. Then, I put the rubber bottle inside a cover and sat on the couch for a couple of minutes before everything spilled all over me.”
Yazmin tried really hard to ease the pain in her leg, but it just kept hurting. She went to Wythenshawe hospital, where they took off the dead skin and wrapped up her wounds.
She went back to the hospital every day for two weeks to get her legs rewrapped, and she thinks she might have scars for the rest of her life.
Yazmin’s skin looked really painful and covered in blisters as she rested in a hospital bed, waiting for her treatment.

After her scary experience, Yazmin has made it clear that she will never use a hot water bottle again. Now, she is working hard to let others know about the importance of checking the expiry dates on them.
She mentioned that initially, she believed it was her mistake for not tightening the lid correctly. However, when she returned home from the hospital, she checked again and noticed a small crack in the seam of the rubber bottle.
I stripped down and hopped into a freezing cold shower for half an hour. At first, it hurt a lot, like a really intense burning sensation, but the cold water helped to make the pain go away pretty fast.
Yazmin described how her ‘skin came off’ while in the shower, adding: “The burns were mainly on my thigh and the top of my vagina and then on my other inner thigh.
The water from the shower was so strong that it made my skin peel off my leg. When I stepped out of the shower, there was no skin left in that spot, and it looked really red. Even more skin kept coming off.
“For days on end my leg kept burning. A week later it was still burning hot.”

Yazmin mentioned that she received the hot water bottle as a Christmas gift a couple of years back. However, after the accident, she was really surprised to find out that the expiry date on it was 2022.
It has been two months since she got burned, and while her skin is healing nicely, the doctors say she might have scars for the rest of her life.
She is now sharing her story about the incident to encourage other hot water bottle users to look at the expiry date on theirs.
My hot water bottle was old, but I didn’t realize it had an expiration date back then. After my accident, I learned a lot of important rules about using hot water bottles.
“You’re not actually meant to fill it up all from the kettle. You’re meant to do half boiling hot water and the rest cold water.”
